The Ulrich Custom Rod

Being an an avid fisherman, I wasn't happy with any of the available fishing rods, especially the fly rods, and so created The Ulrich Custom Rod™ as an answer to the search for a better fishing rod. I make a rod with greater sensitivity, comfort, and performance. Each rod has a hand crafted hardwood handle, which can optionally be customized to your grip, offering highly magnified telegraphic properties. Combined with proper guide placing, the wood handle also contributes to better power transfer that permits longer and more accurate casting. .
The production of a rod begins with your selection of the finest graphite rod blanks available. Each blank is then tested to to determine which is it's stiffer side, or spine. Then the spine is positioned for it's optimal placement of guides and reel seat. This step alone has a significant effect on casting accuracy. If the spine is off to one side the rod will twist or torque in the hand, spoiling accuracy, presentation, and performance.
Based on your preference, I select the wood for the handle to conform to the type and length of the rod. I then fit the handle to precisely match the diameter and taper of the blank. Next the handle and blank are bonded with an epoxy type adhesive to form a single, solid unit.
Once I determine the proper types and placement of guides, I grind and tapir the guide feet so they will bend and flex with the action of the rod, a step that is omitted with commercial and some custom rods. Without this process, which allows windings to be applied smoothly and evenly, the absence of flex causes stress points where rod and guide press together. Performance is lessoned, and thread damage and breakage can occur.
The final step involves the temporary attachment of guides to the rod. Then, in a process called "loading", line is run through the guides, and a strain is put on the rod. The guides are adjusted to obtain optimal load distribution, then custom-wrapped. Triple coated with an epoxy finish, the rod is continuously rotated until dry.
Although there are many other steps involved, it is obvious why The Ulrich Custom Rod™ delivers such quality.
